Raw food, sometimes also called living food, is a food philosophy where nothing is to be heated up over 115°F. This ensures that all the vitamins, minerals and enzymes that contribute to optimal health are preserved (once food is heated up over 115°F they start deteriorating rapidly). Raw food is also often easier for the body to digest and nutrients are more readily absorbed.

Many raw foodies are also vegan, but it’s not a requirement. Some eat raw meat and raw dairy — which is sometimes referred to as paleo or the cave man diet. I am a vegetarian and eat anywhere from 50-100% raw, depending on the circumstances. By no means am I superstrict. You should enjoy life, and if that means the occasional pizza that’s fine. The most important thing is to always remember to always prioritize your health and well-being.

Raw food as a concept was created by Dr. Ann Wigmore, who ran Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston and wrote numerous books on the subject. Wigmore’s concept was all about using living foods as alternative medicine and she also popularized wheatgrass and juicing.

So what does a raw foodie eat? Basically anything that is fresh and natural. Lots of fruit and greens, preferably organic, nuts, seeds, sprouts, etc. There’s an infinite supply of fresh foods in today’s supermarkets that have made this sort of diet possible for everyone, no matter where you live.
